Fun Facts About Truckers
You might see truckers on the road all the time, but what do you really know about them? It’s time to appreciate hard-working truckers with some fun facts about them.
The First Semi
The semi was first invented back during 1898 in Cleveland, Ohio. The inventor was Alexander Winton, who came up with the semi as a way of transporting his cars.
Every day, there are 4 million shipments of “Dangerous Goods” that can’t fly on airplanes for transportation. Trucks have us covered, carrying 94% of these goods.
Women Truck Drivers
Although there are more and more women truckers every year, they currently only make up 6 percent of the trucker population. That’s still more than in 1929, when the very first female truck operator, Lillie McGee Drennan, got her commercial driver’s license.
Truckers have significant roles in several popular movies, although they’re not always accurate depictions. Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure features a ghostly trucker named “Large Marge,” and Stephen Spielberg’s first full-length movie, Duel, features a showdown between a man and a diabolical trucker.
Truckers are hard workers – which is probably why they have one of the highest rates of injuries and illness among all occupations.
