Back-to-School Safety Tips for Drivers
With many families heading back to school in the fall, traffic can be especially hectic. That’s why we’ve put together a list of back-to-school safety tips to help you stay prepared for the surge of drivers and pedestrians. It’s absolutely essential that drivers stay alert and drive slowly around any school zone.
According to the National Safety Council, it’s important to remember that schools have very specific locations and procedures for dropping off your children. If you’re driving the kids to school, make sure you avoid double parking so visibility is not obscured, and never drop off kids across the street from a school, as this can be especially dangerous. If possible, consider carpooling to limit the number of cars that drive near schools.
When sharing the road with pedestrians, there are also a few things to remember. For example, never block a crosswalk by pulling up to far, as this forces children to walk into the street. Remember that flashing lights in a school zone mean you must stop and yield to pedestrians by law. Finally, never pass a car that’s stopped in a school zone, as they are likely picking up or dropping off.
Additionally, be sure to stay alert for bicyclists and buses. Bike riders in many places are forced to share the road with cars. Always take precautions when turning, and also be sure to come to a complete stop around buses with the stop sign deployed.
Above all else, we at Wayne Thomas Chevrolet Cadillac encourage you to drive slowly and patiently while school is in session.
